|
This course is a study of the basic concepts of chemical dependency. Emphasis is placed on understanding chemical dependency from an interdisciplinary level and on examining the socio-cultural patterns of dependency. Individual student’s potential as a chemical dependency counselor will also be addressed. Students beginning the certificate program should start with this course. This course is also appropriate for any student wishing to learn more about alcohol and other drug use, abuse and dependency. |

Course goals 1. To introduce the student to the basic concepts of chemical dependency. 2. To understand chemical dependency from an interdisciplinary level. 3. To examine the socioeconomic patterns of dependency. 4. To investigate the individual student’s potential as a chemical dependency counselor. Course Objectives 1. To examine the facts and myths of chemical dependency. 2. Describe the primary psycho-social factors influencing alcohol and other drug use, abuse, and dependence. 3. To examine chemical dependency within the context of age, gender, ethnicity, and disabilities. 4. Identify and describe the components of the chemical dependency continuum of care. 5. To examine the prevention, assessment, and treatment of chemical dependency. 6. Describe the differing models of treatment and their underlying principles. 7. Understand the individual student’s system of beliefs as it pertains to developing positive and helpful counseling postures and attitudes. 8. Submit written assignments demonstrating college level writing skills. |
