Course Description

This course is an introduction to the study of biological anthropology. The course will cover: the evolutionary biology of humankind based on information from the fossil record and the human skeleton; the genetics of both individuals and populations; our primate relatives; human adaptation and human variation; among our topics. SDCCD Online course is only offered through the internet. Students must be computer literate, motivated, disciplined and have the necessary minimum of five (5) hours to spend on the internet each week. This course is not self-paced.

Course Objectives

§         Understand the subfield of biological anthropology in the larger context of the social and life sciences, including a brief history of the discipline of anthropology as a whole.

  • Review the roots of evolutionary thinking and how it became a central tenet of biological anthropology.

  • Describe the applications of modern genetic research (molecular, Mendelian, population) in unraveling some of the mysteries of human evolution.

  • Survey the field of human adaptation and variation and the ways in which evolutionary forces mold human populations.

  • Learn about living nonhuman primates by their classification, anatomical and behavioral adaptations and social life.

  • Develop an understanding of the human fossil record, as well as the environmental context in which fossils are found and describe the periods of Earth's history during which both nonhuman and human primates arose.

  • Introduce the genus Homo and the causes and consequences of dispersal from Africa into the sequence of hominids leading to anatomically modern humans... Homo sapien sapiens.
