Practical Business Math Procedures, by Jeffrey Slater, 9th Edition, Irwin-Mcgraw-Hill Publishers 2008 (DVD-ROM INCLUDED) Note: Purchase the full version of the textbook which includes 22 Chapters—do not purchase the brief version. ** NOTICE: NEW EDITION OF TEXTBOOK (9th) - SPRING 2008. **

You must purchase the 9th edition of the Slater textbook--do not purchase the 8th edition. You must have your textbook to begin your course, complete homework assignments and take tests. Please plan on purchasing your textbook by first day of classes. 

Not having a textbook may not be used as a reason for not submitting work on time. If you are ordering your textbook online, it is your responsibility to order it in time for delivery by the first day of class.

  

You may purchase your textbook through the SDCCD Online Bookstore. You may also purchase your textbook at the San Diego City College Bookstore.

Course Description

 

This course provides students with a comprehensive study of business mathematics and reviews basic mathematics such as decimals, fractions, and percentages. It also covers the topics of bank services, payroll, mathematics of buying and selling, interest and loans, taxes, insurance, depreciation, and other business computations.

Course Objectives

 

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Solve problems involving decimals, fractions and percentages.
2. Record entries into checking accounts and check registers, and complete a bank reconciliation.
3. Calculate payroll.
4. Solve problems dealing with trade and cash discounts.
5. Calculate markups and markdowns.
6. Apply methods of inventory evaluation.
7. Calculate interest.
8. Define and calculate value of annuities, stocks and bonds.
9. Differentiate and analyze varied business and consumer loans.
10. Define and calculate property taxes, income taxes and insurance premiums.
11. Calculate various methods of depreciation.
12. Prepare financial statements.
13. Construct graphs and interpret simple business statistics.

 

Application and Registration Information

 

REGISTRATION DIRECTIONS:

  1. Complete Online Application (for new SDCCD students). Go to Student Web Services
  2. Receive registration appointment and instructions by email or mail.
  3. Register online at the Reg-e, our online registration system
  4. Make sure that you pay your tuition so that you don't lose your registration!

  5. Order textbooks online. Visit our online bookstore.

6.  After completion of registration on Reg-e, and several days prior to the start of the semester, you will receive an email with course login instructions. If you don't receive an email please go to http://www.sdccdonline.net and login on the first day of class as follows:

Type your WebCT ID = 7-digit College Student Identification (CSID) number
Type your Password =  mmddyyyy (birthdate with no hyphens, slashes, or spaces)
For example:  1010101 (CSID number used at registration)
                          06231980 (password for birthdate June 23, 1980) 

  1.  If this course is closed, please login to Reg-e to be placed on a waitlist.
  2. If the waitlist is full, you will not be able to add your name to the waitlist.

 

 

You will not be able to login to your online course until the first day of the semester!!!
You must login to your online course on the first day of the session to avoid your enrollment being dropped.  Follow the login instructions at http://www.sdccdonline.net/login.

After registration is over, students that are on the Wait List for BUSE 101 must contact briva@sdccd.edu by email the first day of the class if they would like to request an add code. Add codes will not be given out before the first day of classes. Only a limited number of add codes may be given. If a student is added they are responsible for purchasing their textbook the first day of classes and meeting all the due dates.

Course Specific Information

·         Students must log into their course through WebCT within the first two days of the session or they may be dropped.

·         Students must carefully read the syllabus to make sure they are able to meet the course requirements. No additional time will be given to complete this course.

·         Students must purchase their textbook and begin studying the first day of classes.

·         This is not a self-paced course; students must meet reading, homework, and test deadlines. No late work (assignments or tests) are accepted.  There are no excused absences.

·         Students are responsible for having a reliable internet connection; not having access to the internet will not be a reason for missing assignments or tests.

·         Students must have basic computer skills and should be familiar with WebCT Vista before they begin their course. Go to SDCCD Online for more information about preparing for your online course. I would suggest working through the tutorial before the first day of class.
