application software is MS Office 2007
Professional, which contains Word 2007, Excel 2007,
Access 2007, and PowerPoint 2007. A 180 Day
trial version of the MS Office 2007 software is provided as one of
the three items in the required 3-item textbook bundle. Office 2007
Pro software is also available at the Learning Resource Center
computers at City College, Mesa College, and Miramar College.
Windows Operating System software (Windows XP or Windows Vista) and
the latest version of an Internet Browser (Internet Explorer v7
preferred) are also required. Adobe Reader v8 is required to view
much of the class material.

Course Description |

There are 3
required items; 2 required textbooks and an 180 day trial version of
MS Office 2007 Pro. The Concepts text (Technology in Action,
Complete, Fourth Edition) is the basis for computer concepts
quizzes and Internet projects. The Office text (Go! with
Microsoft Office 2007, Introductory) will be the basis for
application quizzes and application lab homework exercises.
Application exercises will be completed using Word2007,
Excel2007, Access2007, PowerPoint2007 in Office 2007
Professional. There will also be mini-projects on computer and internet
topics using operating system (Windows XP or Windows Vista) and web
browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape or Firefox) software.
In this course you will learn basic through advanced computer concepts with an emphasis on both the personal computer and enterprise computing. Topics include hardware, application and system software, the Internet and World Wide Web, communications, e-commerce, societal issues, database management, systems analysis and design, programming, information systems, career opportunities, certifications in the computer field, and computer trends. Our objective is for students to develop an in-depth understanding of computers as essential components of society and of the business world. We will focus on the computer as a valuable productivity tool, recognize the personal computer's position as the backbone of the computer industry and emphasize its use a stand-alone and networked device. We will also present strategies for purchasing and maintaining a personal computer system, including networking these systems. This course also provides an overview of microcomputer applications including Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (Microsoft Word 2007, Microsoft Excel 2007, Microsoft Access 2007, and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007).
This course is
an introduction to basic principles and theory relating to problem
solving and analysis in business organizations using computers and
software packages. Emphasis is placed on computer organization, data
processing systems, decision support systems, and systems analysis.
Business software is reviewed with an emphasis on application suite
systems including hands-on word processing, spreadsheet, database,
graphics, and presentation applications. This course is intended for
the transfer student planning to major in business, economics, or

Course Specific Information |
This course is delivered 100% online. This course will be conducted in an accelerated pace with assignments, projects, and quizzes due on or before every Wednesday and Sunday throughout the summer session. Make sure to purchase the text prior to the 1st day of class since assignments and quizzes will be due in the first week of class.
Attendance
Students must log in to the course no later than June 4, 2008. Students who fail to log in on or before 6/4/08 @ 11:59 pm will be dropped.

This course requires that students have access to a computer with Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista. Students must have access to a computer with MS Office 2007 Professional. Macs are NOT acceptable in this course for the Office 2007 Pro assignments. |

CISC-181 is a demanding transfer course
which requires a lot of organized student effort on an almost daily
basis. This is an online class, not a self-paced class. You are
expected to login to this class at least four times a week. There are several assignments and two quizzes scheduled
for the first week. Late Work is Unacceptable!You must have regular access to the course-required software,
including MS Office 2007 Pro.
Earlier versions of MS Office WILL NOT SUFFICE. You
should have MS Office 2007 Pro available from the start of
class. You must also install the latest version of Adobe Reader. You must have the two required textbooks; part of the 3-item
bundle for the class. You must have a regularly-available internet
connection. You must have access to the required software.
Students taking
this class must be aware of school policies with respect to
plagiarism and academic cheating. College Procedure 3100.3, [copies
can be obtained in the Office of the VP, Student Services],
describes the Academic and Administrative Sanctions for students who
are found to be cheating. Several students have been removed from
recent CISC-181 classes with appropriate sanctions for using someone
else's work or allowing their work to be used by another. You must
NEVER use another student's file! You must NEVER allow any of your
