Required Orientation & Exam Information

 

Mandatory Face-to-Face Orientation. Monday, 6/16, 12:00 – 2:00 PM, Room C226-Lab, City College

*Bring your text & CD, paper, pens, a dictionary, your Student ID Card.  If you are trying to add, bring proof of prerequisite

If you cannot attend, you must make arrangements with me in advance. All students (registered and those trying to add) must attend or make advance arrangements with the instructor. Specific dates for the remaining face-to-face exam sessions will be listed in the syllabus.

NOTE: Registered students who do not log in the first day or make arrangements with me will be dropped as “no shows.” People on the waiting list who attended the Orientation will be added in the order of the official district wait list. If you have difficulty, contact your instructor immediately and/or SDCCD Online 388-7330 or 388-3398.

Exams: This course requires 2 in-class or proctored writing exams during the semester. All exams will take place at City College. If you are unable to attend, you must arrange for an approved proctor in your area within the first 2 weeks of class. Assignments are due on a weekly basis. Class meets online from 6/16/08 - 8/9/08. People who do not log in and post work (OR communicate with the instructor as to why they are not submitting work) will be dropped during the first two weeks for non-attendance.

Logging In Go to www.sdccdonline.net/login for log in directions and general information. If this is your first course in WebCT, I strongly encourage you to attend the free orientation sessions listed at the www.sdccdonline.net site. These sessions teach you how to use WebCT and be successful in an online class. I do not do this in our class orientation. Our course will become open for adding to your WebCT account on the first day of classes, Monday, June 16, 2008.

 

 

Textbook and Course Material Requirements

 

Required Texts: College Writing Skills with Readings, 7th edition, by John Langan and All Write CD (Publisher: McGraw-Hill);  (You may use any edition of the All Write CD)
CAUTION: Make sure you get the version of this text that includes the All Write CD. Don't buy it or open the wrapping until you check your BOOK CAREFULLY! Flip the book over. If you don't see a booklet attached to the back that says "ALL WRITE CD," return the book and make sure you get the correct book with the All Write CD. Other instructors have ordered this book without the CD and with a different CD. Check before you purchase and keep your receipt in case you need to return or exchange your text. You must have this book and the All Write CD for this class.

Required Materials:
A working email address, PowerPoint, a word-processing program, and reliable access to the Internet

Purchase Textbooks Online at the SDCCD Online Bookstore or at the City College Campus Bookstore.

 

NOTE: Not knowing how to use a computer or not having a computer is not an acceptable excuse for falling behind or not doing the work. Do NOT take this course if you do not have reliable access to the internet.

Course Description

 

Prerequisite: A "C" or higher in English 10 or English 50 or Assessment Category W4 on the Placement Exam. You must have a placement score or proof of passing from English 10, 40, 50, or 43 to take this course. Students who need to take English 56 are encouraged to take 56 before or at the same time as English 51. This course is designed for students needing practice in writing skills and grammar. It will stress paragraph and essay development, and will review sentence structure, mechanics and grammar as needed

NOTE: To earn a grade of "C" or better in this course or a “P” (Pass), students must pass a portfolio graded by the District English Department AND satisfactorily complete class work.

Course Objectives

Course Objectives: The goal of this course is to help you

1) feel more confident in each writing step, from pre-writing through drafting, revising, and editing;
2) write clear, coherent, well-developed paragraphs and short essays;
3) develop correct, varied, and effective sentences;
4) improve your critical thinking skills; and to
5) help you pass the exit exam and advance into English 101 and beyond.

  2. Receive registration appointment and instructions by email or mail.

  4. Make sure that you pay your tuition so that you don't lose your registration!
  5. Order textbooks online. Visit our online bookstore.

6.  After completion of registration with ClassTalk or Reg-e, and several days prior to the start of the semester, you will receive an email with course login instructions. If you don't receive an email please go to http://www.sdccdonline.net/ and login on the first day of class as follows:

Type your WebCT ID = 7-digit College Student Identification (CSID) number
Type your Password =  mmddyyyy (birthdate with no hyphens, slashes, or spaces)
For example:  1010101 (CSID number used at registration)
                          06231980 (password for birthdate June 23, 1980) 

  1.  If this course is closed, please call Classtalk @ (619) 624-2100 or login to Reg-e to be placed on a waitlist. If the waitlist is full, you will not be able to add your name to the waitlist. I will take people in order of the waiting list who attend the orientation

You will not be able to login to your online course until the first day of the semester!!!
