Course Description

Advisory:
ENGL 051 and ENGL 056 and CBTE 103, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or assessment Skill Levels W5/R5.

This basic course presents an overview of the features of the Microsoft Windows operating system and the components of managing files and folders in the Windows environment. In this hands-on course, students learn to use and customize the start menu; work with Windows accessory programs; open data files; manage disks, folders and files; create shortcuts; and customize the desktop. This course is designed for those students planning to major in this field and may also be useful to students who wish to upgrade their computing skills. (FT). Associate Degree Credit & transfer to CSU and/or private colleges and universities.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • dentify the components of the Windows desktop and the elements of an open Window.
  • Explain and give examples of the features of the Windows operating system.
  • Manipulate files and folders in Windows Explorer.
  • Choose Control Panel settings.
  • Examine and use the My Computer Window to perform disk, folder, subfolder and file management.
  • Create a document with a Windows application program.
  • Manage open Windows on the Desktop through the use of windows control buttons.
  • Compare and contrast the features of Windows Explorer and My Computer.

Violations of standards of academic honesty will be reported to the school dean for appropriate actions.

All work submitted must be your own work. If test are not returned or if the work done is not your own (no points earned for collaboration on a test or an assignment--we want to assess what YOU have learned), a zero will be given. The second instance will result in a failing grade for the course and notification to the Dean of Students Affairs.

Students who do not have access to the equipment, software, and services necessary to take this course at home may use the resources at Mesa College. Computers are available for use in the LRC or the CBTE Department classrooms in K402 and K405. Local public libraries may also have these resources available. Map of Mesa College campus

NOTE: Students have had problems accessing their course website and their system locking up when they use AOL—if possible, avoid AOL.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CBT 114

  1. Print out this syllabus and read it.
  2. Consult Unit Lessons under Course Content in Webct or Learning modules for detailed directions of your assignments.
  3. You must log into your course website at least once prior to June 30, 2008 .  This will insure that your professor knows you intend to complete the coursework. If you do not log into the course prior to this date, your professor will drop you from the course for nonattendance and a spot will open up to allow someone on the waiting list to add the course by the last day to add.
  4. Before starting work on this course, study the Vista Training - Student Orientation tutorials, which show you how to use the WebCT Vista tools so that you can successfully complete this online course. You will find the link to the student tutorials on your MyBlackboard page, listed under Course List.
  5. While work is due within the week it is assigned, you have until midnight on the last day of class to turn in all work. Please email us if you find you cannot complete the work in a timely manner.
  6. If any of the assignments or quizzes are missing, you will receive a ZERO for that assignment.
  7. Each quiz may be redone. You will receive the higher of the two grades.
  8. Assignments and tests will be corrected within the week and your grade will be entered into the gradelog. If we do not check your submissions or email during the weekend, we will do so on Monday.
  9. Any changes to this syllabus will be posted.
  10. Sometimes an unforeseen circumstance arises that prevents the student from finishing his/her work for the course.  The final decision on whether to grant an incomplete grade will be based on several factors and is entirely up to the instructor.  If you are requesting an Incomplete to be given to you for this course, you must contact your professor before the end of the course.

  7.  If this course is closed, please login to Reg-e to be placed on a waitlist. If the waitlist is full, you will not be able to add your name to the waitlist.
