Course Description

This is an introductory course of computerized accounting system functions utilizing an integrated general ledger software package (such as QuickBooks) and spreadsheet software (such as Excel).  It will focus on the daily accounting for a small service business.  Issues addressed will include techniques in sales and receivables, payables and purchases, general accounting, payroll and creating a company in QuickBooks.

Students will use a step-by-step tutorial method to complete the daily accounting transactions using QuickBooks software.  At the end of each chapter, the students use a different fictitious company to reinforce the concepts presented within the chapter.  At the conclusion of Chapters 1-6, students will use a new fictitious company to complete a comprehensive practice set containing transactions learned throughout the text.

Course Objectives

The main objective is to provide the students with an understanding of how a computer software program aids accountants in preparing daily journal entries, creating periodic financial statements, and maintaining the overall financial status of a small or medium sized business.  Students will learn how to initiate a software program, create a company profile, and record sales transactions and purchases.  Students will use general accounting practices and perform end of period procedures.  These procedures include, trial balances, financial reports, backing up data, and post closing financial statements.  Students will also create and maintain a payroll system for a small service business.  The last chapter teaches the student how to computerize a manual system, which requires setting up a new company using the “Easy Step Interview” process.
