Recommended: Students should have basic communication and writing skills. Students will be graded on grammar, spelling, punctuation, good sentence formation, complying with timely work submission, proper work citing. Students should also have a working knowledge of

 Textbook is required for this course. Students must purchase their textbooks the first day of the semester in order to complete assignments.

The textbook is available to purchase online at the SDCCD Online Bookstore or on campus at the City College Bookstore. Purchase Textbooks Online at the SDCCD Online Bookstore. There is the possibility that the textbook can be located online at sources such as amazon.com.

Course Description

This course introduces students to the principles of effective business communications. Students experience the broad development of the ability to analyze, organize, and compose various types of written communications.

This course is also specially designed to assist students in technical careers to develop resume, letters and proposals.

 

***Please note that this course is based on the concepts of Business Opportunity  Learning Projects (BOLP) and Outcome Education.  . In addition to learning traditional Business Communications concepts each student will be given the opportunity to demonstrate his/her knowledge by working on a business team project or student generated project. Students will address issues in a real company. The final product for this class will be a Business Communications Portfolio.

Course Objectives

 

 

1.      Analyze the functions and procedures of communication in organizations.

2.      Identify barriers of communications.

3.      Identify the characteristics of successful teams.

4.      Describe the forms of nonverbal communication and how they can be used positively in your career.

5.      Analyze the importance of listening in the workplace.

6.      Identify and use the 3x3 writing and speaking process.

7.      Write various letters that make direct claims, generate goodwill, recommendation, persuasive and negative messages.

8.      Describe various resume types and styles.

9.      Identify and write examples of reports, memos, E-mails and proposals.

REGISTRATION DIRECTIONS:

  1. Complete Online Application (for new SDCCD students). Go to Student Web Services
  2. Receive registration appointment and instructions by email or mail.
  3. Register online at the Reg-e, our online registration system
  4. Make sure that you pay your tuition so that you don't lose your registration!

  5. Order textbooks online. Visit our online bookstore.

6.  After completion of registration on Reg-e, and several days prior to the start of the semester, you will receive an email with course login instructions. If you don't receive an email please go to http://www.sdccdonline.net and login on the first day of class as follows:

Type your WebCT ID = 7-digit College Student Identification (CSID) number
Type your Password =  mmddyyyy (
birthdate with no hyphens, slashes, or spaces)
For example:  1010101 (CSID number used at registration)
                          06231980 (password for
birthdate June 23, 1980) 

  1.  If this course is closed, please login to Reg-e to be placed on a waitlist.
  2. If the waitlist is full, you will not be able to add your name to the waitlist.

You will not be able to login to your online course until the first day of the semester!!!
You must login to your online course on the first day of the session to avoid your enrollment being dropped.  Follow the login instructions at

After registration is over, students that are on the Wait List for BUSE 119 must contact LBrady@sdccd.edu by email the first day of the class if they would like to request an add code. Add codes will not be given out before the first day of classes. Only a limited number of add codes may be given. If a student is added they are responsible for purchasing their textbook the first day of classes and meeting all the due dates.
