Welcome to Dr. Simpson’s (“Doc’s”) Online Bus. Law 140
UPDATE: To help you
save $ on high book costs, our book is ONLY 1/3 – 1/2 THE PRICE
of book used at another college!
Previously successful online students during the past seven (7)
years have praised our course for the interesting and relevant information learned, the specific detail of expectations provided by
the instructor, and the user-friendliness of the website itself.
By following the
specific instructions throughout the course and the website,
each and every student may earn an "A" while working at home, on
ships overseas, etc.
Online learning is
‘distance’ education and, as such, students often feel ‘distant’ from the
professor. Here is some background
to aid your comfort level:
Your professor wrote and taught the
very first Online ‘Business’ course within San Diego County
several years ago. She fully
understands the needs and commitments of working students and those with
otherwise-busy schedules.
Anonymous student evaluations
include comments such as: “All instructions specifically explained on
website, real-world oriented (no busy-work), highly organized, you always know
what is required and when, easy to understand website, Doc really cares,
etc.”
(Further
detailed information regarding your professor’s 30+ years of teaching experience can be found at the very end
of this document.)
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS
Please consult our college catalog.
You will find that this business course is either ‘required’ or ‘highly
recommended’ for several Business and related majors. This class is REQUIRED for Business and Business-related
2-yr certificates and degrees. At
SDSU and CSU San Marcos it is similarly REQUIREDand
transfers as “Finance 140.”
On our website you will find your
Syllabus, Grade Info page, and Student Gradesheet
upon which you track your points earned as you progress through our course.
CLASS
EXPECTATIONS
Students have successfully
completed this course with Dr. Simpson, regardless of whether it has been
offered during a full semester, Intersession, short beginning of summer
(June), or 5-week summer—whether out of state, local, or
overseas.
This is possible since all grade
requirements and instructor expectations are carefully and thoroughly
stated on our website. Students are
never left in doubt as to grades, grading standards, timelines, and any
possible exceptions.
Anonymous student
evaluations overwhelmingly agree that this course takes ‘about the
same amount of time’ as do their on-campus courses in Business.
Quizzes are taken from the textbook
and are all multiple-choice. They
are chapter-specific. Students are
given at least one-half hour to complete 20-question quizzes.
Why
is there NO Mid-Term and NO Final Exam?
In the real world of
business, employees who succeed must perform well consistently—not
merely perform in a superior manner on one or two days every few months,
after having ‘crammed’ to prepare.
Why
are the tests NOT a majority of your grade points?
Applying what you have learned is the key to your “real world” success in business. Your professor believes that your
‘thinking’ and application of what you have learned deserve
more weight (points) than do ‘tests.’ Students with “test anxiety” are able to
demonstrate their learning very well when this pressure is relieved.
NOTE: There are some students who should enroll
in OR should succeed better in an
on-campus class. If you are in doubt
as to whether online learning is for you, please carefully read ‘FAQs’
below AND take the Readiness Assessment on the official www.sdccdonline.edu website.
IMPORTANT
PRE-START INFORMATION
- All pre-start information that you need(including how to log-in) is listed there.
- NO student is
able to access ANY Online class website prior to morning on the day
the course officially begins.
- Be sure to
perform the browser check on the sdccdonline.edu website, as well.
- You will need to
have access to MS Word. Most
libraries, as well (free) as our college, have computers with this
software.
- You will need to
have your textbook (and access code if one is required) PRIOR to doing
work on our website.
- You will need a
reliable server, so that yours does not ‘time out’ while
you are working on our website.
FAQs (“Frequently Asked Questions”)
Will I be a
successful online student in this class?
You will need to be self-motivated. Certain types of individuals have proven
not to be comfortable and not to do well in our online environment. For
these students, it is highly recommended that they attend an on-campus
class instead. Most typically, unsuccessful
students are those who:
- ask
questions that are already answered on the website;
- in
order to be motivated, rely upon the instructor;
- do
not check their email daily;
- do
not check specific areas of the Discussion threads daily;
- rely
upon other students for assistance;
- ask
unnecessary clarification questions because they are lax to retain the
information and materials provided;
- do
not have English reading and communications ability equal to a high
school graduate;
- procrastinate
(delay completion of) tasks; and/or
- cannot organize their job, family, and/or personal
matters in order to set aside sufficient time to accomplish their
homework and exams.
If you do NOT fall within those categories,
then online may be perfect for you!
