Course Description

 

This course is designed not only for art students but also for those who are interested in history, humanities, teaching, travel, and cultural enrichment. It is an introductory survey of the visual arts that are most relevant to an understanding of western civilization, from prehistoric Africa and Europe through the Gothic period. It includes major monuments and representative artworks from Mesopotamia, Iran, Egypt, the Aegean and Greece. Also included are the Hellenistic, Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, and Islamic worlds, and artwork from early Medieval, Romanesque, and Gothic Europe. Course Objectives

 

1.      Analyze the formal elements and techniques of individual works of art in different media.

2.      Evaluate works of art in relation to the sociological, religious, historical, and cultural context in which they were created.

3.      Define the various styles in art, and demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast stylistic aspects and trends.

4.      Define and use effectively the terminology in order to identify differing styles, trends, and techniques in art.

5.      Identify individual works of art and architecture by various artists.

6.      Critically analyze the concepts that define and distinguish Western art and demonstrate the ability to discuss these concepts contextually.

 

After completing this course the student will be able to demonstrate their ability to differentiate between art periods and styles, from the Paleolithic period through the Gothic. The student will also be able to discuss the cultural and historical factors that influence art, and demonstrate their ability to critically analyze these works. As a result, the student will gain a greater appreciation of art and the powerful affect it has and continues to have on society as a whole.
