Course Description

 

This course, which covers the history of the United States from its colonial origins through the period of Reconstruction, provides an overview of the diverse peoples who interacted, settled, and influenced the history of the nation and its developing economic, social, and political institutions.  The course requires students to analyze a variety of materials, think critically, and write thesis-based essays.  The course is required for history majors and is recommended for transfer students.  History 109 taken in conjunction with History 110, 115B, 123, 151; Black Studies 140B; Chicano Studies 141B; or Political Science 102 satisfies the District and may satisfy the CSU graduation requirements in United States History, Constitution, and American Institutions and the requirement in California state and local government.

 

Course Objectives

 

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast the social, political, and economic characteristics of the societies in the Americas, Western Europe, and Western Africa that came into contact after 1490, and analyze different colonial societies that developed in the 17th century;
  2. analyze the ways in which culture, political institutions, and economic developments shaped the emergence of political parties and representative government in the United States;
  3. explain the effects of slavery, mercantilism, and participation in the larger Atlantic economy on the development different economic and social systems in the North and the South; 
  4. analyze western territorial expansion and explain its impacts on foreign relations, Native Americans, the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, and development of sectional politics;
  5. compare and contrast the resources and social and economic experiences of the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War and analyze the competing Reconstruction plans that influenced American politics after the war.

  4. Make sure that you pay your tuition so that you don't lose your registration!
    Fees are $20.00 per unit for in California residents and $163.00 per unit for non-residents.
  5. Order textbooks online. Visit our online bookstore.
  6. After completion of registration on Reg-e, and several days prior to the start of the semester, you will receive an email with course login instructions. If you don't receive an email please go to http://www.sdccdonline.net and login on the first day of class as follows:
     
    Type your WebCT ID = 7-digit College Student Identification (CSID) number
    Type your Password =  mmddyyyy (birthdate with no hyphens, slashes, or spaces)
    For example:  1010101 (CSID number used at registration)
