“Using Study Groups for Discussions”

PowerPoint Presentation

Roger A. Gee
Professor of Accounting
San Diego Mesa College

Brief Description:
I will show how I set up study groups within each learning module before the beginning of the semester and how to populate the study groups on the first day of class.

I will provide a list of topics that I use for my study group. While this list is specific for accounting, it contains examples of the types of topics that work best and some that could not get much student participation. By focusing on types of topics, I can help the faculty come up with rules for selecting topics that are specific to their own courses.

I will share how I grade the original and reply messages for each learning module topic and explain why the points are required rather than of the extra credit variety. I will also share when I grade the topics so that I am not spending my weekends working on my online courses.

What three specific things will attendees learn from your session?

  • How to set up study groups within learning modules.
  • What types of topics work best for study groups.
  • How and when to grade original and reply messages efficiently.
